Mario Sanciu
CEO, Entrepreneur & AI Business Builder
I registered my first VAT number at 16, working in the tech sector. I graduated in Economics from the University of Cagliari in 2009, where my thesis was based on a renewable energy venture: a 3MWp photovoltaic plant on a 42,000sqm industrial facility in Sardinia, developed by Enersol. My career began in the shadow of the 2008 financial crisis, which hit early-stage investments and projects hard, and taught me more about resilience than any classroom ever could.
Between 2009 and 2013, I served as general manager of a 16,000sqm four-star hotel complex in northern Sardinia, overseeing real estate development, pre-opening operations, spa, dining, MICE events, and banqueting, all with a strong digital focus. During the same period I was involved in a general insurance agency in northern Sardinia and led feasibility analyses, M&A processes, and restructurings across energy, construction, tourism, media, and agriculture.
In 2013 I won a competitive public tender for Hermaea Beach, in Capriccioli on the Costa Smeralda — the same venue that had previously been Flavio Briatore’s Billionaire Beach. During that season we hosted high-profile international events, including Trivago’s global party with managers flying in from 40 countries. Management was interrupted after one season because revenue exceeded the ceiling set by the tender. A problem I was happy to have.
In 2011 I founded Olbia.it, now among Sardinia’s most-followed independent digital newspapers, reaching nearly 70,000 people daily. In 2017 I launched Spesati, the first online supermarket in Sardinia: delivery within 2 hours, own logistics, no intermediaries. The same year I founded IMMORTALE, a limited-production premium Cannonau wine with 4 years of barrique aging and a direct-to-consumer model.
In 2019 I was formalized as CEO of Spesati. The company grew to 28,000+ registered users, cumulative revenue exceeding €7M, and secured a strategic partnership with an industrial group in the grocery sector with over €1 billion in annual revenue. Spesati was recognized among Italy’s most innovative retail startups by EconomyUp.
Then came 2020. The pandemic hit Spesati at full speed: 120 people on the ground across multiple warehouses, 500 orders a day, and a financial model that needed to be rebuilt from scratch while operations continued. That crisis forged a kind of leadership you can’t learn from books. The kind that comes from making payroll during a global shutdown.
We came out of that crisis by stripping revenue down to its bare essentials and concentrating every available euro of liquidity on operational efficiency. Once the right discipline was in place, two capital increases — September 2023 and April 2025 — made uninterrupted growth possible: revenue doubled in two years, personnel cost incidence reduced by 41%, marketing spend reduced by 65%, while average basket size, purchase frequency, margins and perceived quality all grew sharply in parallel.
In 2025 I built GroceryAI, an AI-powered WhatsApp ordering platform for grocery retail. An advanced AI automation system managing tens of thousands of products across multiple warehouses. Built entirely by myself, using AI as my development partner, without hiring developers. In production since January 2026, serving real customers daily.
Alongside the entrepreneurial path I’ve kept a continuous study of financial markets. Between 2013 and 2014 I studied and practiced professional trading on currency markets. Between 2023 and 2025 I carried out study and practice on U.S. equity indices, trading directly and at high intensity on the DOM (Depth of Market) using institutional-grade order flow analysis tools.
I’ve built companies in the middle of financial crises and a global pandemic. That’s where real leadership is forged — not in boardrooms, but in the field.
